In this article, we investigate the effect of online community review feedback on video game sales and usage intentions through a series of empirical studies. The first study demonstrates that video game reviewer valence (positive or negative) correlates with actual product usage of current owners. Negative reviews decrease usage intentions compared to no-review control, even after accounting for individual user level ratings of the same game. These effects are mediated through image concerns about appearing as an incompetent consumer, which can make consumers more hesitant to purchase or play a video game that is negatively reviewed.
The second study builds upon this work by examining the role of social context on these results. Using a moderation-of-process design, we find that the positive and negative effects of video game review feedback are attenuated when the review is posted on a social network, such as Steam. The positive and negative effects of video game feedback are also attenuated when the feedback is provided by friends who share a similar game usage behavior as the reviewer, or if the feedback comes from within a gaming community with an active social presence.
