The first step in insulating your attic is to have a qualified building performance institute (BPI) contractor seal any gaps and holes. They will also remove any existing insulation, if necessary. If you plan on doing the job yourself, make sure any active knob and tube wiring is properly rerouted before starting. You should also avoid laying any new fiberglass roll insulation over soffit vents or recessed “can” lights, as these can block ventilation and cause heat loss or condensation.
Once the attic is sealed, your BPI-certified contractor will begin putting in the new insulation. Rigid foam board made of foam plastics such as polystyrene, polyurethane, or polyisocyanurate is typically installed in 4’x8’ pieces and cut to fit between attic rafters. This type of insulation has a high thermal resistance, so it can be very effective at keeping your home warm in the winter. This is one of the more expensive types of insulation, but it can be easily recouped by the savings on your energy bills over time.
