Spray Foam InsulationSpray Foam Insulation

If you’re ready to upgrade your home’s insulation, spray foam is an excellent option. It’s both more effective and more affordable than fiberglass batt insulation. Spray foam insulation is a petroleum-based concoction sprayed directly onto walls and other surfaces to make them thicker, stronger, and more energy efficient. It acts as both insulation and an air sealant, closing the nooks and crannies that drain your building envelope, raising monthly energy bills, and wasting resources.

Choosing the Right Spray Foam Insulation for Your Project

When applied properly (and by qualified professionals), spray insulation creates a custom, airtight building envelope. It also blocks convective heat transfer from conditioned to unconditioned spaces, helping your heating and cooling systems operate more efficiently.

However, spray foam requires careful attention to a variety of details and conditions to perform well. For example, the attic and other above-grade areas need to stay dry and free of cracks and moisture, unwanted critters, and more. The basement should be sealed from vapor and condensation, and crawl spaces should be ventilated.

Moreover, spray insulation is not appropriate for certain applications or climate zones, and it should be avoided in wet or sub-50°F temperatures. It’s also not recommended for use around electrical wiring or plumbing.

The spraying and curing process of spray foam insulation emits large quantities of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These chemicals, especially isocyanates, can irritate the eyes and gastrointestinal tract and cause respiratory problems including chemical sensitization that can lead to asthma. As a result, homeowners need to vacate their homes during the installation process and remain away until the spray foam has completely cured.
